Abstract

Correlation Between Number of Monocytes and Smoker and Non-Neutrophils Smokers at Coffee Shops in Wonocolo Region, Surabaya Sukmawati Nuraida Milasari(1), Indah Lestari(2), Ary Andini(1) Progam Studi D-IV Analis Kesehatan, Fakultas Kesehatan,Univesitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya E-mail: sukmawati.nuraidamilasari@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Cigarettes is one of the potential sources of human disease. Toxic substances of cigarettes caused decreasing of lung function. Inflammatory response in lung could change leukocyte types, including neutrophils and monocytes. The number of neutrophils and monocytes increased as the body performs resistance to immune response due to toxic substances of cigarette smoke. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the number of monocytes and neutrophils in smokers and non smokers. This study used simple random sampling with cross sectional approach which had taken respondents in coffe cafe around Wonocolo subdistrict, Surabaya. Blood samples were taken from venous blood then analyzed by using a hematology analyzer at the Central Laboratory of Health Surabaya(Balai Besar Laboratorium Kesehatan Surabaya). The results of 26 samples of smokers and 26 samples of non smokers could be seen with average number of monocytes smokers about 7.92 ± 2.134% while non-smokers monocytes about 8.12 ± 2.405%. The average number of neutrophils smokers achieved 53,96 ± 7,717% while neutrophil non smoker reached 59,62 ± 9,992%. Based on the correlation test showed no significant relationship between the number of monocytes and neutrophils in smokers (p = 0.546) and non smokers (p = 0.588).
